Ellisnore was laid out and established in 1889 when the Frisco Railroad located there. Some believe the town was named for a railroad engineer, others believe it is named after the town in Denmark featured in William Shakespeare's Hamlet. Another origin of the name comes from Rev. W. H. Stratton who believed the town was named after Elsie and Nora Pace, the daughters of Joseph Pace, who lived and taught school in the area. The town has gone by two spellings, one with two "LL's" and one with one"L."
